Power Lunching

February 16, 2011

The Wall Street Journal just did a fabulous piece on us, all about Power Lunching.  Enjoy it below!

  • Power Dining: Michael’s, Lamb’s Club

Within elite power-lunching circles there have been quiet comparisons between the new, stylish “it” canteen, the Lamb’s Club, on 44th Street, and the established, courtly Michael’s, on 55th. Not surprisingly, the two restaurants share some noteworthy commonalities: Sancerre, Kim Kardashian and, yes, a Cobb salad.

Established: 1989

Proprietor: Michael McCarty

Recent diners:Kate White, editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan; Cindi Leive, editor-in-chief of Glamour; Sol Kerzner, hotel magnate; Martin Bandier, chairman and CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing; Barbara Walters; David Zinczenko, editor-in-chief of Men’s Health, and Ms. Kardashian.

Power lunch dishes: Cobb salad ($36) and seared Maine scallops ($36) “Nobody wants to be locked into the prix-fixe menu,” said Mr. McCarty.

By the glass: Lucien Crochet Sancerre 2008 ($16) and The Malibu Vineyard Rambla Pacifico Pinot Noir 2007 ($20). The restaurant goes through 50 cases of Pellegrino per week.

Power table: There is no “it” table at Michael’s, but Mr. McCarty said that the restaurant’s garden room and front dining room have their own loyalists. “Most of the media people like to hover around each other in the front dining room. Most of the art world, real estate and finance do the garden. That wall of power tables along the back window in the garden room is hedge fund, venture capital, private equity central.”

Being a regular: “We subliminally trained people that to be a great customer all you need to do is really eat here a lot,” joked Mr. McCarty. “The real winners eat three meals in a day. They’re the ones that get the gold star.” Gold-star holders include Jack Kliger, former CEO of Hachette Filipacchi Media, and attorney Richard DeScherer.
